Catching Up With Fergie, AVON Global AmbassadorOctober 16, 2015
Fergie is a multiplatinum singer, songwriter, fashion designer, actress, creator of five Avon fragrances, and an Avon Global Ambassador. She is also an advocate for breast cancer awareness and breast health. In this interview, she opens up on how cancer has personally impacted her life, how she has gotten involved to increase awareness of the disease, as well as ways women from the breast cancer community are a source of inspiration for her.
Fighting cancer really hits home for me, because my life has been directly impacted by it. Both of my parents are cancer survivors, and I’ve lost both my grandmother and uncle to cancer. I really admire and applaud everyone who is involved in the fight against breast cancer. I hope that in my own way, I can help inspire and empower women (and men!) who are going through the experience to become advocates for themselves and their health. And I hope that with the more support we can give, the easier the fight it can be for patients, their loved ones, and the community in general.
When did you begin working with the Avon Foundation?
I’ve been working with the Avon Foundation since 2009 and truly value our partnership. I’ve also had the chance to attend two AVON 39 walks in 2010 and 2012. These issues are close to my heart and I want to do all I can to help.
How are you helping Avon and the Avon Foundation this October for Breast Cancer Awareness Month?
I am thrilled to partner with Avon and the Avon Foundation to kick off new and exciting breast cancer awareness activities this month, including the #BeABreastFriend campaign. Our goal is to inspire women of all ages to have conversations with their best friends about breast health. You talk about everything with your best friends, so why not breast health? We want to encourage women to promise one another to get screened – so what better way to do this than to ask your best friend? I encourage all readers to check out the #BeABreastFriend video and tag your “breast friend” to help spread awareness! Together, we are all creating a strong statement that breast health no longer needs to be a private matter.
We hear that you have a new fragrance. Can you tell us about Outspoken Party! and its connection to the breast cancer cause?
With my new fragrance, Outspoken Party!, I thought about fearless women who are true to themselves and their beliefs. I thought about women who aren’t afraid to ask for what they want, what they need, or even speak their minds. I thought about women who aim to empower themselves so they can empower others. And I also thought about how we should all celebrate life (and the special people in it) each and every day.
Women and families impacted by breast cancer are my outspoken heroes, so I am proud to share that for every purchase of Outspoken Party! throughout October, $5.00 will be donated to the Avon Foundation for Women to support breast cancer programs throughout the United States. Funds raised will help improve screening, diagnosis and treatment; support patients that are navigating the medical and emotional challenges associated with their disease; and enhance breast cancer education overall.
Do you have any upcoming events scheduled to celebrate the launch of your fragrance and to support those fighting breast cancer?
Yes! I am in New York to kick off AVON 39 The Walk to End Breast Cancer, one of seven 2-day, 39-mile walks across the country. While I am here, I’ll have the chance to meet a few amazing women and men making a difference in the breast cancer community, including top fundraisers who have raised thousands for the cause.
I am also presenting at a very special event honoring the Avon Foundation Breast Cancer Centers of Excellence and the Avon Foundation’s amazing partners in the breast cancer field. The work they do every day is so important and inspiring to me.
You’ve attended AVON 39 events in the past – what would you tell someone thinking about signing up for one next year?
AVON 39 events are an experience unlike any other. There is an overwhelming feeling of love, support, compassion and camaraderie amongst the walkers. It’s a time when all participants – mothers, daughters, wives, fathers, sons and husbands – unite against breast cancer. The two-day long event is truly an experience of a lifetime – I would absolutely encourage everyone to participate – whether it’s registering for a future walk event in 2016, or donating to the cause. Every little bit counts.
